Oddly, Multistrata (many layers, covered) was the correct naming (etymology) and a typo occurred with Kennicott's 1861 naming originally. He meant Multistrata, wrote Multistriata. Poor editing obviously. Kenneth Williams describes the ssp again in 1988 and refers to it as Multistriata and the name stuck, at least until a new authority reverts to the correct etymology or relegates them to Gentilis.
When in doubt, stick with Williams' text (Multistriata)
